A good-hearted glee-fest adapted from Joanna Weinberg’s one-woman anti-chauvinist cabaret show

Goddess has so much plucky good-heartedness you want to give it a medal. If it feels more like a brave act of combat than a film, that’s because it began as a one-woman cabaret show called Sink Songs: a merry blast of musical protest against male chauvinism by Australian housewife turned writer-performer Joanna Weinberg.

Now a big-screen glee fest, it is exuberantly put over by Laura Michelle Kelly as the heroine, a mum and “kitchen goddess” with a startling resemblance to our dear Nigella. Best of the variable rest is Magda Szubanski, roly-poly and Ethel Merman-vowelled as the advertising whiz who snaps Kelly up after witnessing her singing-dancing webcasts. The whole world east and west of Woomera has soon done so. That’s the new age of Aquarius for you: a muse delivery system right in your home. You have no excuse, in the 21st century, not to be Ginger Rogers in your own kitchen or Busby Berkeley in your own bathroom.
