Interview six former heads of the Shin-Bet, Israel’s internal security service, and you’d expect them to justify torture (it prevents “90 per cent of suicide attacks”) and civilian deaths when they “take out” terrorists. Yet they are scathing about the intransigence of Israeli politicians too. Israel should talk to even the most militant Palestinians, says one: “It’s a luxury not to speak with our enemies.” This is serious, documentary stuff but a narrator would have helped signpost a debate that requires substantial knowledge of this drawn-out conflict.
