Alain Guiraudie, 2013
Lakes seldom spell anything but trouble in the movies and this French erotic thriller is no exception. Franck is a frequent visitor to a lakeside beach that doubles as a gay cruising spot. Days unfold in rituals of sunbathing and swimming but courting is over in the blink of an eye. And sex (depicted with eye-popping explicitness) is not the only primal urge present, as Franck finds when he is seduced by the magnetic but menacing Michel. Guiraudie expertly works the film’s atmosphere, creating a stillness that only helps to amplify the tension as events build to a nerve-shredding finale.
