Bright Days Ahead – film review

Fanny Ardant looks fantastic in Marion Vernoux’s Bright Days Ahead (Les Beaux Jours). That big-jawed, full-lipped face, a little scary in its beauty, receives an extended charisma lease helped by ash-blonde hair and a kilo or so of mascara. She and her character are sixtyish, but love doesn’t end for the brave. She romances the hunky, fortyish boss of a seniors’ club. Will hubby take her back after straying? Don’t hold your breath, or your heart: it’s not exactly Brief Encounter. But Ardant has the moves. It’s the younger cast members who must struggle to keep up.
