Former Hefner singer Darren Hayman follows The Violence, his album about East Anglian witch trials during the English Civil War, with a recordings of 17th-century songs re-imagined as rugged acoustic-rock; there are no cries of “hey-nonny-nonny” or jingling Morris dancers. The freeness of the reinterpretations animates the source material all the more effectively.
