This popular place has exposed brick, wine crates, red chequered tablecloths and delicious-sounding specials. A shrimp and zucchini flan had crisp and crumbly pastry filled with fresh ingredients and was just the right side of wobbly. A yellowfin tuna carpaccio, dessert of sweet, juicy pineapple and a glass of tip-top Pinot Grigio and excellent coffee helped this perfect meal along.

Al Porto

Its speciality is raw fish, but all ingredients are top of the range and delivered daily. No wonder the place is always busy. I ate salt-crusted sea bass garnished with unwaxed lemon and watched the crowds get stuck into crustacea. The clams in white wine and garlic seem to be one of the most popular dishes in this pretty, maritime- themed restaurant, but everything that came flying out of the kitchen looked tempting.

This über-modern restaurant is at the top of its game, with high prices to match. The dining room is light and bright and the staff handsome and smartly turned-out. A tasting menu included raw purple shrimp from San Remo with honey vinegar, mackerel with salt and herbs, pasta with crispy vegetables, and a sharp-sweet Amalfi lemon granita to finish. The cheeses are perfectly kept.

Restaurant Montechristo

Large, informal and decked out in Mediterranean blue, this restaurant is famous for its seafood. The starter course of a raw fish selection featured prawns in oil and lemon: outstandingly good, with all three ingredients singing out. We followed with the fish soup and toasted bread but still managed some excellent ice cream and a decent espresso.

Osteria Acqua e Sale

This large restaurant has the advantage of a stunning garden and is also beautiful indoors. It specialises in Puglian cuisine, with red mullet, anchovies, gilt-head bream, mussels, sea bass and cuttlefish all to be had. Lunch consisted of a large and impressive antipasto selection of both hot and cold seafood including some of the lesser-known varieties such as goose barnacles. Bread is home-made and service laid-back but efficient.
