Antiphon” means “opposite voice” in Greek, which is a fancy way of Midlake telling us that their singer has done a runner. It happened while the Texan rockers were making their new album, when former frontman Tim Smith quit the band midway through recording sessions.
Guitarist Eric Pulido has taken over vocal duties, his voice a plainer presence than Smith’s cosmic tones. Meanwhile the music veers away from the proggy English folk-rock obsession of their fine last album The Courage of Others towards a more textured variety of psychedelic rock, with nicely flowing rhythms but frankly rather dull songcraft.
