John Martyn’s finest work for Island is in this box: its 17 CDs and one DVD contain 12 studio albums and hours of preliminary takes, live concerts and messing around in the studio.

Around the era of Bless The Weather, with Martyn’s echoplexed guitar responding to Danny Thompson’s plucked double bass, or in the vibraphone haze of Solid Air, the music sounds timeless; only in the 1980s does it briefly come down to earth.
