It is 18th-century France and it is terminally winter. Illegitimate and rejected by her struggling family, 16-year-old Suzanne (Pauline Étienne) is coerced into taking her vows for a religious life. But after voicing her desire to leave the convent she has joined, she becomes the prey of her mother superiors; one suicidal, one sadistic and one Sapphic (Isabelle Huppert).

Adapted from Diderot’s epistolary novel, the cold interiors of cells and chapels are shot in icy blues. A starkly beautiful account of the fate of a young woman.
