A suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting at a high school in Broward County, Florida, on Wednesday, that has left 17 people dead, making it one of the deadliest school shootings in US history.

The shooting happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Wednesday afternoon. “I’m saddened to say that 17 people lost their lives,” said Steve Israel, Broward County sheriff, on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, officials said at least 14 victims had been taken to local hospitals.

The suspect is Nikolaus Cruz, 19, according to law enforcement in Broward County, which is about 40 miles north of Miami.
