To the young Sydney trio of Jagwar Ma, psychedelic music is as much a phenomenon of the 1990s and 2000s as the official golden age of the 1960s. Their debut treats the Beach Boys, the Stone Roses, Primal Scream and Animal Collective as elements on the same continuum, influences to be freely blended.
The source material is clearly signposted – “The Throw” takes inspiration from Screamadelica, “Man I Need” is “Madchester” in the sun and “Did You Have To” drifts into a haze of Brian Wilson harmonies and Animal Collective sound effects.
But the results, vibrantly imagined and crisply produced, aren’t so much derivative as rejuvenating: “Exercise” is the new music the Stone Roses appear incapable of making.
