US president Donald Trump has suggested via Twitter that the suspect who is alleged to have perpetrated Tuesday’s terror attack in New York should be sentenced to death.

Federal prosecutors allege that Sayfullo Saipov killed eight and left a dozen injured in the name of Isis. They say that Mr Saipov drew inspiration from Isis propaganda videos and began planning the deadliest attack in New York since September 11, 2001, a year ago.

Mr Trump tweeted:

“NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!”

Mr Saipov is alleged to have been the driver of a pick-up truck that ploughed through pedestrians and cyclists on a bike path in lower Manhattan.

During an interview with law enforcement, Mr Saipov “requested to display Isis’s flag in his hospital room and stated that he felt good about what he had done,” according to the complaint. Mr Saipov said he chose Halloween because he thought there would be more people on the street.
