“I am a sinner, I have sinned,” Sharon Van Etten sings, drawing the phrase out for as long as possible: the repetition is typical.

The New York singer-songwriter, an indie darling following 2012’s breakthrough album Tramp, specialises in emotionally raw, handsomely-orchestrated confessionals.

But I found my interest being leached away by the dirge-like pace and unvarying tone of Van Etten’s singing.
