Perhaps it’s because Marks and Spencer’s own-label beer sales are up, or that Dutchman Marc Bolland’s team is in the World Cup final, but the new M&S boss had only warm words for the England team and the retailer’s official suits for the players.

Despite stories of internal discord and pictures of the downtrodden players returning in their official M&S outfits, Mr Bolland said he would be happy to provide the suits again.

The backing given by fans to the team even when they aren’t doing well was one thing he liked about the UK, he said. “You support people when things are down.”

Hopefully investors will share that spirit of support if the retailer starts seeing the effects of a possible double-dip.
