Following a diversion with Broken Bells, his side-project with the producer Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, James Mercer resurrects his indie band The Shins with their first album in five years.

Bright production and rousing choruses fix an eye on the chart success that Mercer tasted with Broken Bells.

Meanwhile, highly artful lyrics place him in a more rarefied realm, where songs about ancient Greek sea-gods and emotional sublimation are normal currency. The results are upbeat and literate, but also somewhat compromised.
