Winds and Piano

Les Vents Français

(Warner Classics)

Les Vents Français number here five outstanding wind players, including Emmanuel Pahud on flute and François Leleux on oboe. Bring in a pianist, the mercurial Eric Le Sage, and the possibilities multiply.

This three-CD set includes classic piano and wind quintets by Mozart and Beethoven, Poulenc’s mad-cap Sextet, an appealing Quintet by Rimsky-Korsakov, and frothy (sometimes vacuous) fillers by Roussel, Caplet, and the little-known Louise Farrenc and Ludwig Thuille.

The playing sparkles. None of these pieces will challenge the intellect, but each in turn tickles the senses.
