“There’s a whole other world out there,” a woman’s voice says as Back on the Planet begin. The cosmic adventure gets off to a confusing start as LA hip-hop producer Ras G works through his Sun Ra obsession with an abstract haze of polyrhythmic drumming and frazzled synths. But then things snap into focus with an imaginative melding of old school hip-hop and Afro-futurism – an otherworldly vision of cut-up samples, sci-fi bleeps, low-end bass and tribal percussion.
