“Maximum volume yields maximum results” is Sunn O)))’s philosophy, pursued via slow-motion doom-metal riffs that press down on the listener like a perverse chakra. But the US duo turn the loudness down on their latest album, a collaboration with Norwegian prog-metal experimentalists Ulver.
“Let Their Be Light” is a shimmering, ambiguous instrumental that clambers forebodingly to its feet near the end while “Eternal Return” is mournful and slow, a Pink Floyd-style vocal emerging from the Stygian gloom. What’s lost in volume is gained in atmosphere.
