Christianne Stotijn: Stimme der Sehnsucht

Stimme der Sehnsucht – Lieder by Pfitzner, Richard Strauss and Mahler

Stotijn’s thoughtful programme is themed around the “Voice of Longing” cited in the opening track – a Hans Pfitzner song based on a poem by Carl Busse. All five Pfitzner items here have a dark, expressionist hue, with “Nachtwanderer” probing the subconscious in terms reminiscent of Schubert’s “Erlkönig”. The Strauss group, including “Ständchen” and “Zueignung”, stresses the positive side of longing, while Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder is drenched in longing for how life once was. Stotijn confronts its emotions with acute sensitivity, and then leaves us with the benediction of Strauss’s “Morgen!”. A connoisseur’s recital.
