Students from Cambridge University will be hoping the UK’s sunny weather continues for the next week as they drive their solar-powered car the length of the UK. This is believed to be the first ever solar-powered journey across the UK.
The students, including Tim Ensor from the Judge Business School, are driving the 874 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats in the car they designed and developed themselves. They are hoping this will be a precursor to crossing Australia next year in the 2009 World Solar Challenge.
The students believe the car, called Affinity, which looks like a giant solar panel on wheels, has a top speed of between 50 and 60 miles per hour. Four students will drive the car in rotation and will be supported by some 40 further students.
Team member Tim Ensor of Judge Business School added: “This project is a fantastic example of business and engineering working together to support education and the environment. It’s also been a great opportunity for students from different disciplines within the University to come together around a common goal.”
