From Mr Keith Tunstall.

Sir, Neither support from the FT nor anger from David Cameron will decide the fate of Turkey's application to join the European Union. It will be the people who decide.

More particularly it will be the people of France and Austria, who have each been promised a referendum on the subject.

Can anyone conceive of a Yes vote? If the prospect of a Polish plumber was enough to ditch an earlier referendum, the possibility of 70m Turks having the right to head west will surely sink this one. A referendum in the UK would produce the same result.

We owe it to Turkey to halt this charade of possible membership immediately.

Keith Tunstall,

Bletchingley, Surrey, UK
