Directed by Greg Berlanti, 2018

It may lack the heft and anguish and introspection of Moonlight or Brokeback Mountain — but by making a gay teenager the hero of this American high school romcom, Love, Simon is still quite the landmark.

Yes, its sensibilities are popcorn bordering on pure corn, and yes it plays it safe, with all of Simon’s friends, parents and teachers gay-friendly (and affluent) liberals. So when Simon finds love online, what, you ask, is stopping him coming out of the closet? But wait: what lifts the story’s momentum isn’t just a boy-meets-boy subversion of the genre, but a boy-doesn’t-even-know-who-other-boy-is guessing game.

A high school drama from a major Hollywood studio, it’s safe and accessible, yet still a groundbreaking entry in the gay canon.
