With the World Cup less than a month away, accountants are reminding business owners that they could hold a football-themed office party free of tax.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales noted that employers can spend up to £150 per staff member on corporate entertainment each year without incurring any income tax or national insurance.

On top of this, employers will get tax relief on the total costs – even if the party lasts just 90 minutes.

This total covers food and drink as well as accommodation and transport home if the employer pays for these. The rules apply to any annual party or similar function, which must be open to staff generally
or to workers at a particular location.
