In a near-future megacity, newly separated Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) signs up to a personalised operating system and quickly warms to the husky automated voice (Scarlett Johansson) who introduces herself as Samantha. Soon they are inseparable – she constantly plugged in to his earpiece, her camera eye experiencing life as he does; the more they talk, the more sophisticated and alluringly human she becomes. Could this be the perfect relationship, minus one obvious issue? Or could that be overcome too? A sort of Weird Science for grown-ups, this is a touching, thought-provoking film.
