From Mr Marc McDonald.

Sir, In her Lunch with the FT interview (“I don’t give a damn”, Life & Arts, October 15), pianist Mitsuko Uchida says that “reverse racism” is widespread in the US classical music field and that music boards must “bend over backwards to select African-Americans”. But as anyone who regularly attends music events in the US can tell you, the classical music field here is overwhelmingly white and elitist.

The fact is, America’s major orchestras and conductors are 98 per cent white, and the composers whose works are performed are almost 100 per cent white. Ms Uchida’s bizarre statements about the US classical music field are baseless and simply don’t square with the facts.
