Danny Boyle, 2013
20th Century Fox
Up to his eyes in gambling debts, auctioneer Simon (James McAvoy) helps a criminal gang steal a £25m Goya. What could go wrong? Lots, of course – in this case, an ill-timed bout of amnesia, as Simon forgets where he’s stashed the canvas. Enter hypnotherapist Elizabeth (Rosario Dawson), who claims to be able to retrieve lost memories, though whether she – or anyone in this twisty, highgloss caper – can be trusted is far from clear. It’s beyond preposterous, but Boyle, aided by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, makes it giddily compelling.
