Gretchen Parlato: The Lost and Found

The Lost and Found

(Obliqsound)

Gretchen Parlato approaches her self-penned lyrics with the same oblique logic as her main inspiration, saxophonist Wayne Shorter.

As fragile as the relationships she describes, her half-whispered, pitch-perfect vocals curl over understated harmonies and hover decisively over the ultra-sharp contemporary grooves of her terrific band.

Robert Glasper co-produced – he plays piano on the original “Still” and arranged Simply Red’s “Holding Back the Years” into new life – but the largely original repertoire is band derived and custom-built for Parlato’s tempered fragility.
