Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, said that Brexit should be a “new beginning” for European integration.

Speaking at a conference of Europe’s centre right leaders in Malta one day after Britain triggered exit talks, Mr Juncker said:

Brexit isn’t the end of everything. We must consider it to be a new beginning, something that is stronger, something that is better.

Mr Juncker also fired a broadside at US President Donald Trump over his support for Brexit.

“The newly elected US president was happy that Brexit was taking place, and asked other countries to do the same. And if he goes on like that I am going to promote the independence of Ohio and Austin, Texas”
