Trumpeter Sean Jones’ confident phrasing, fluent technique and poised solos were honed by a decade of playing lead trumpet for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
On this album, his seventh, he showcases his skills with a back-to-basics quartet recording featuring the empathetic pianist Orrin Evans and the rock-solid time of drummer Obed Calvaire.
Jones is muscular on the bustling “60th & Broadway”, fragile on ballads and emotions run high on the Spanish tinged “Dark Times”, but he reveals a brittle side on “Not While I’m Around”.
