The Fault in Our Stars – film review

Love and fatal illness: a powerful cinematic combination for some, too schmaltzy for others

Love and fatal illness were heavenly box-office twins in Love Story and are back in The Fault in Our Stars. The film, from a weepie bestseller by John Green, is barely distinguishable from its 1970 screen predecessor, especially if the mists of time – or tears if you’re the target viewer the makers seek – render you powerless to distinguish puppy-pretty Ansel Elgort from Ryan O’Neal or plucky-tomboyish Shailene Woodley from Ali MacGraw. (Elgort and Woodley were both in the teen hit Divergent, first learning how to instil ecstasy in the acne generation.) The movie will be the stuff of truth and tragedy for some; for others, crafted schmaltz with an eye on the money.
