There are so many musical layers and references in the make-up of pianist/keyboardist/composer Marc Cary’s focus trio that at first it’s hard to take it all in.

The opening “Todi’s Blues” has tablas, atmospheric synth and fusion beats, “He Who Hops Around” is built on a leaping grand piano motif and the atmospheric bass solo on “Indigenous” sits on a laid back hip-hop groove. Cary pulls it together with panache, a steely technical fluency and a band honed by 10 years on the road.
