The American trumpeter’s vivid imagination and strong sense of history is at full flow on this fine-tuned balance of free-flowing improvisation and firm compositional narrative.

Each track has something new to offer – there are guest spots from guitarist Charles Altura and the modernistic OSSO string quartet – while three equally potent vocalists include Cold Specks sounding remarkably like Macy Gray on Akinmusire’s “Ceaseless Inexhaustible Child”.

The trumpeter’s spiralling lines, though, remain the focus, and the CD climaxes with a sixteen-minute twist-and-turn blast from his superb quintet.
