Product: PlanetSaver for Deloitte
Agency: The Partners
Territory: US, UK and India

Deloitte wanted to engage its staff worldwide with its brand positioning “always one step ahead”. At first it considered communicating this via a screensaver, but The Partners pointed out that modern screens do not need “saving” as they do not suffer “screen burn” in the way that older models did.

So instead, the agency focused their efforts on a “planet saver”, and designed a desktop application aimed at encouraging employees to cut energy consumption by putting their computers on standby.

The Partners created a dialogue box that pops up when the computer has been idle for three minutes. Rather than the negative language of “powering down”, users can make the positive choice to “Activate PlanetSaver”.

When the computer is reactivated, the app tells the user how much energy they have saved by being on standby. This is conveyed in real-life terms rather than bald figures, such as the number of pieces of bread that could have been toasted or how long a hairdryer could have been running.

It launched last year and is being rolled out country by country.

So far, 31,000 employees have taken up PlanetSaver, reducing the company’s energy consumption by more than 64 Megawatt hours.
