Sir, If I want to buy a McDonald’s franchise I have to undertake to maintain certain customer standards (“ Watchdog attacks handling of strike-hit rail franchise”, January 10). Failing that I can lose (without recompense) my franchise.
Can someone explain why the UK government chooses to ignore the same principles when it sells a rail franchise?
If it had insisted franchisees maintained no lesser standards of service than that which they inherited we would have more seating and restaurant cars — to name just two.
