Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars
Rise & Shine
Recruited from West African refugee camps, the All Stars play a mixture of styles.
“Global Threat” is a sturdy reggae conflation of climate change, environmental degradation and military conflict. “Muloma” begins in a clatter of percussion and takes off into sprightly central African chiming guitars.
Elsewhere, there are traditional initiation songs, all drumming and call-and-response and chirpy Manding anthems. “Goat Smoke Pipe” is sly highlife political satire. A boisterous rap amid the slurping horns of “Grrr Mani” provides the most modern moment.
