BT has appointed Chet Patel, a 23-year company veteran, to lead its continental European operations in the wake of the accounting scandal at BT Italia.
Mr Patel fills the role vacated by Corrado Sciolla who stepped down in January after BT was forced to warn that it had taken a £513m writedown against the value of the Italian unit to reflect allegedly fraudulent behaviour that had boosted its cash flow.
Mr Patel joined BT in 1994 from Charles Schwabb, the stockbroker, and has held a number of roles within the telecoms company including stints running the payphones business and head of customer services for its retail division.
He has worked within Global Services as vice president of UK products and sales and most recently as head of global portfolio and marketing.
BT shares gained 1 per cent but remain down 11 per cent since the start of the year.
