Dave Douglas & Uri Cane: Present Joys – review

Trumpeter Dave Douglas continues his exploration of traditional New England music with this delightful and intimate duet album, featuring pianist Uri Cane.
Five pieces reimagine songs from the original C17 “shape note” songbooks – the opening “Soar Away” is suitably stately and melancholic, the title track moves into swing and quotes a Charlie Parker classic – and five are broadly “in-style” originals composed by Douglas.
Though contemporary in scope, each track reflects the sparse harmonies, dignified phrasing and sense of community of a bygone era.
