Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola’s brassy, centred tone comes with a wisp of breath. It adds a delicate edge to a powerful aesthetic reminiscent of the approach of the New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott.
Pohjola mixes jazz tradition, popular anthem and Finnish folk, and, now approaching 40, has matured this approach into a deeply personal and moving personal vision.
He brings it vibrantly to life on his latest CD, helped by his close-knit regular rhythm section and, on the final “The End is Nigh”, an orchestral flourish.
