Despicable Me 2 – DVD review

Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud, 2013

Set a super-villain to catch a super-villain: that’s the plot of this digimation sequel, as sociopath-with-a-heart Gru – moon-stealing anti-hero of the first movie – is enlisted to track down the maniac who has stolen a terrifyingly potent mutagen.

Actually the plot here is secondary to the inventive glee with which Coffin and Renaud riff on the conventions of the super-villain/super-spy genre: DM2 abounds in fiendish gizmos and ingenious slapstick. Witty and warm-hearted, this is a superior family flick.
