Stern to be first NYU school to launch degree in Shanghai

The business school leads the charge into China for the New York institution with a masters degree in business analytics

The Stern school of business at New York University is to launch a Master of Science in Business Analytics degree in both New York and Shanghai, making Stern the first school at the university to launch a degree on its Pudong campus, now under construction. NYU is the first American university with independent legal status approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Stern is arguably the first top-ranked business school to launch a degree in this discipline, which stands at the intersection of business and technology. The masters programme is designed for executives with at least 10 years experience in professions such as manufacturing, technology, healthcare and energy. “I think this is a programme with wide applicability,” says Stern dean Peter Blair Henry.

“We need a new mindset for the twenty-first century,” he continues. “There’s a surfeit of data in the world and data without a framework is just noise. If you are going to use data in business you need to take a multidisciplinary approach.”

Although the programme will be taught by faculty from the business school, most notably the information systems and marketing departments, the business school is now working closely with other departments in the university, such as law and public policy. “Students understand that the world of policy and the world of business are not separate,” says Prof Henry. Also, in March, Stern and the NYU School of Medicine launched an MD/MBA dual degree programme in which students can complete both degrees in five years.

The dean expects these relationships with other departments to deepen, as the university pursues policies on globalisation and the future of cities. The MS in Business Analytics can contribute to ideas about the latter, says Prof Henry. “How do you create cities for the twenty-first century that are more efficient and green? All of that depends on the analysis of data.”

Prof Henry will not be drawn on the Stern school’s future plans for Shanghai, or for Abu Dhabi, where NYU also has a campus. “There’s a blank sheet of paper,” he says. “We are looking at everything.”

The NYU Shanghai campus will open in 2013 and the MS in Business Analytics will launch in May that year.
