The distinctive chug-a-lug, drum-free rhythms of Django Reinhardt’s hot club of France recordings have long been a jazz circuit speciality – the Barbican is hosting a tribute concert to mark the centenary of the guitarist’s birth on 15 July.

This motor city quintet stand out for retaining the original model’s subtle steel and broadening the repertoire – Mingus, Miles Davis and Chopin’s “Tristesse” are included. There are fluent solos from bandoneon, violin and guitarist Evan Perri and zippy originals are flavoured with the bittersweet essence of tango nuevo.
