Theresa May, the UK prime minister, called US President Donald Trump on Tuesday to inform him of the upcoming snap election she announced earlier in the day, according to a readout from the White House.

Mr Trump “wished the British people the best of luck in their electoral process,” the statement said. No further details were provided.

Mrs May was among the first foreign officials to visit Mr Trump after his inauguration earlier this year. Mr Trump has also voiced praise for the UK’s vote last year to exit the European Union, a process that formally got underway last month.
