Schoenberg: Orchestral works

Masterpieces performed by the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle

The raison d’être for this CD is Schoenberg’s celebrated orchestration of Brahms’s Piano Quartet No 1, for which the Berlin Philharmonic’s majestic sound is ideal.

The opening Allegro has the requisite Brahmsian weight and the finale oozes colour, but Rattle’s laboured pacing and phrasing spoils the Andante. He is more in tune with the Chamber Symphony No 1, which the Berlin strings turn into an essay in romantic ecstasy.

Between these two backward-glancing masterpieces comes the brief, expressionistic Accompaniment to a Film Scene.
