The Furrow Collective – the Emily Portman trio plus Alasdair Roberts – breathe life into traditional songs from England and Scotland, with a minimal backing that deploys saw, harp and harmonium to eerie effect: ‘Demon Lover’ is sung a cappella but for occasional dabs of saw and guitar, like a ghost whistling in the distance; on ‘Henry Lee’ the wind is an audible presence. The Old, Weird Britain never sounded older or weirder.
