Closed Circuit is written by Steven Knight, scenarist of Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises. In the credits he names himself “Steve”. Perhaps he hopes we’ll think he’s a different person. A bog-standard tellyish thriller, the film pushes Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall through the plot about a terrorist bombing in London and the complicity (or not) of MI5.
John Crowley emails in his directing: “Get actor A to say his line, then get actor B to say hers.” The camera clumps between familiar locations. Every known face in British Isles drama is here: Jim Broadbent, Ciarán Hinds, Riz Ahmed, Anne-Marie Duff … But they are treated like witnesses pushed into the stand for 10 seconds apiece, then told to go and have a sandwich until re-summoned.
