Lisa Dillon plays Moll Cutpurse, the super-cool, maverick “roaring girl” at the heart of Thomas Dekker and Thomas Middleton’s 1611 play. Moll (based on real life character Mary Frith – and perhaps not quite as outrageous as the real article) is drafted in to help an amorous young man convince his father that his choice of bride is a good one. Moll will pretend to be the fiancée, so making the real woman appear preferable in comparison once the truth is revealed. The plot is nearly thwarted, but in the end Moll is justly revealed to be an unconventional but honourable woman.
Jo Davies’s production launches the RSC’s “Roaring Girls” mini-season.
