Eon:

Market value: about €66.3bn.

Europe-wide: Ruhrgas supplies about 60 per cent of Germany’s gas, and is one of Europe’s largest gas companies.

Central Europe: Munich-based Eon Energie has 17m electricity and gas customers.

UK: Eon UK - branded Powergen - has 6m electricity and gas customers. An integrated energy company, it generates and distributes electricity as well as retailing electricity and gas.

Scandinavia: Eon Nordic operates in Sweden and Finland.

US: Active in the midwest - Eon gained ownership of Kentucky-based LG&E Energy as part of its takeover of the UK’s Powergen.

Endesa:

Market value: about €27bn. (Monday’s closing price.)

Spain: Endesa is the largest electricity utility in Spain, with about 10.5m customers - a 44 per cent share of the market. It also has a 10 per cent slice of the Spanish natural gas market.

Italy: Endesa Italia - about 80 per cent of which is owned by Endesa - is Italy’s third-largest electricity generator. A number of buyers have expressed an interest in buying the unit if Gas Natural’s bid for Endesa is successful.

France: Endesa is the main shareholder in Snet, France’s second-largest electricity generator, with a 65 per cent stake. It also has a 25 per cent stake in Soprolif, a power plant operator.

Latin America: Forty-four per cent of Endesa’s Latin American assets are in Chile. The company has a 61 per cent stake in Enersis, the largest private electricity group in the region. Outside Chile, Enersis has operations in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Peru.
