Rupert Everett stars as the ageing and revered Habsburg Court composer Antonio Salieri, who finds his nose put seriously out of joint by the arrival of a giggling, petulant young rival, who just happens to be the genius Amadeus Mozart.
In this fictionalised account, Peter Shaffer’s award-winning play, set in 18th-century Vienna, follows Salieri as he descends into increasingly embittered and mad jealousy, and considers themes of excellence and mediocrity and the way no amount of hard work and dedication can trump extraordinary natural talent. Joshua McGuire plays Mozart in Jonathan Church’s revival, which is the first production in the Chichester Festival Theatre following its £22m refurbishment.
