Jens Weidmann, the president of Germany’s Bundesbank, has become the latest senior global official to warn the Trump Administration of the dangers of trade protectionism.
Mr Weidmann used a conference organised as part of Germany’s hosting of the G20 group of countries to defend free trade.
“We would like to invite you to discuss all these topics in an open and constructive atmosphere of mutual trust and cooperation,” the Bundesbank president said in Wiesbaden on Wednesday. “In our view the success of the G20 process depends on the conviction that international cooperation and an open markets approach provide benefits for all countries and peoples involved.”
Some US Treasury officials were attending the event, held in Schloss Biebrich, a short drive away from Frankfurt, Germany’s financial capital.
