Born in Houston, raised in Romford, now living in New York, Dev Hynes has brought a similar restlessness to his music career, from youthful indie days with Test Icicles to chamber-pop in his Lightspeed Champion guise and now the sophisticated R&B that he makes as Blood Orange.
Cupid Deluxe is his most fully realised work to date. The pace is languid, the songs at once busy with activity but pleasingly simple to the ear. Mostly they’re duets, Hynes’ breathy voice accompanied by New York singer Samantha Urbani; they are seductive and slow-burning, with strong echoes of Prince.
